Nerd Thursday, Jun 19 2008

This is just a reminder of how much of a nerd he was…is.

Here it is

…and we’re back Sunday, Jun 15 2008

I don’t know what it is, but I have felt so turned off from getting on this blog for quite some time. I guess I am not much of a fan of May/June blogging. But here I am again. Hopefully I can keep up some kind of a semi-regular pace. That’s all I’ve got for now. Gonna go prepare for the end of the world, or whatever Alex is talking about…really I’m just gonna watch this SNL Mike Myers tribute that’s on. Peace

Bracketology Tuesday, Apr 8 2008

I don’t want to go overboard here, but I’ve got to boast a little bit. This is just too good, I wanted to put it on here for all four viewers of this site to see. My NCAA Bracket this year was pure greatness. I had a bit of a slow start, but when it really mattered, I made the right calls. Here’s the breakdown:

11 of the “Sweet Sixteen” – 6 of the “Elite Eight” – 4 of the “Final Four” – Both teams in the Championship Game – And the winner, Kansas

I tried to put a picture on here of my actual bracket, but not only was that too difficult, it might be a little over the top. I mean I don’t want to seem like I’m bragging… too much. Also, I don’t know who all watched it, but that game tying 3-pointer by Kansas that brought it to overtime was one of the most amazing shots I’ve seen in a while. Way to end the season. Okay my head is getting so big its about to pop.

Bourbon Day Sunday, Mar 30 2008

Yesterday I went for a drive and ended up at the Maker’s Mark distillery out in central Kentucky. It was a pretty neat place. Al, I definately think you need to come up here eventually and go on a little bourbon tour with me. By the time I got there they were shutting down for the day, so I didn’t get to see much. One cool thing was I got to see the big warehouse buildings all over the place that store the barrels to age the bourbon for x number of years. It is pretty cool how bourbon is such a huge part of the culture here in Kentucky.

I almost bought a bottle, but was afraid my Baptist-beacon would go off and the Seminary Secret Service would arrest me.

Bunnies & Eggs? Sunday, Mar 23 2008

I wanted to say that it was sad not getting to be with the family today, this Easter holiday. I really wished I could have been back in TX enjoying some good food and great company. It’s times like this that I realize how special my family is to me. I can think back to times when I was a kid thinking about how much I wanted to be away from my family (mainly my awful brothers, mainly my awful older brother). I actually thought I would be happier if I distanced myself from them. Of course most of those feelings I’m remembering were from around my junior high years, which I’m pretty sure that is just standard procedure. But really, I remember not appreciating how great my loving family was. So on days like this, it is a sad yet wonderful reminder of how much I miss you all, and what you all mean to me. I love you very much.

A side note I’d just like to add, I still have yet to discern how the resurrection of our Lord is related to these common Easter themes we know of today. I mean, giant bunny leaving candy in baskets, and Jesus Christ rising from the dead on the third day. I don’t see the connection.

And another thing, why can’t we get that rabbit/egg physiology right? And who invented Peeps?!

i don’t know what this is… a rough draft Wednesday, Mar 12 2008

Jesus, please hear the cries of your broken children. We have fallen into the snares around us. We are weak and lost. By the time we knew where we’d come our strength was not enough. We need to be rescued. Our efforts are failing and the pit is growing deeper, the edge is moving further and the murk is getting thicker. Where is our rescue? We call out because we are helpless, “Jesus”! Our last resort. Our first resort. Our cries do not fall on deaf ears. His arm is strong and his footing is firm. His reach is great and our rescue is here.

ski Saturday, Feb 16 2008

Went snowboarding yesterday at the Ohio/Indiana/Kentucky border. Just a note… it is no Rocky Mountains out there. It was pretty pathetic when at the top of the slopes you could see cars driving past, level with you. It really was just an over sized hill with man made snow blown all over the place. I did have fun though, even with being sore in all kinds of random places today. I think I’m getting old.

P.S. I forgot to add this note; one of my more proud achievements. I had a paper due the day I went skiing. So on the way up to the “mountain” I buckled down a cranked it out (it was only like 4 pages, not a whole research paper). When I got there, was able to connect to the internet in the lodge area and send off the thing right there. That’s how seminary should be I think…barely getting the work done in time and sending it off in the middle a day out on the slopes.

Phat Tuesday Tuesday, Feb 5 2008

Hey dudes, I just wanted to shout out to ya’ll on this special day. I don’t know if you’ve made any plans yet for tomorrow, but I think there is some tradition where you put lint on your head and give up something until Easter. I don’t know all the details but it’s probably on wikipedia. Adam, I hope you enjoy Fire School this week. Tell me when they cover kitten rescue, I wonder if they focus at all on theory or if it’s all hands on practice. Alex, I hope you enjoy your first week of work. You know its important to set your trends early. That being said, make sure you don’t make the coffee, and take extra long lunch breaks. Be diligent.

New page layout….. yay or nay?

A dairy queen dialogue Thursday, Jan 17 2008

This morning I was getting some breakfast at Dairy Queen, skipping class (it’s never good to skip when your class is only a week long). I had my bible under my arm as I was ordering since I was gonna do a little reading while I ate my biscuits and gravy. Anyway, the lady at the register noticed the “good book” and commented something along the lines of “if only more people would read that and do what it said, things would be alot better”… or something to that effect. A bit startled at her comment and not really sure what to say in response, I sorta agreed with her and replied with some lame affirming comment. So after she got my biscuits and gravy from the cook’s window and handed them to me, she asked if I’d heard of Joel Olsteen. To which I replied ‘yes’ but didn’t say any more because I wasn’t sure where she stood on him and didn’t want to offer my opinion too quickly. Honestly, I have great disdain for Joel Olsteen, and I think he is on the verge of being a heretic. But anyway, she began to talk about how much she loved him and how great his books are, and what not. Again, feeling odd and a bit startled I again politely agreed and had some lame affirming comment. But I felt bad because all I was trying to do was be nice to her and make her feel comfortable…while in effect, really just lying to her. For some reason in that situation I felt like it was more important to be agreeable and friendly than be honest. So now that it is all said and done, I thought I needed to stand tall and formally state my position, albeit on a blog that no one at dairy queen will ever read. Anyway, the situation ended with both of us affirming how great Olsteen is and how more people should read the bible and stuff. It was an odd situation full of weird polite exchanges and spurious heretic endorsements.

The biscuits and gravy were really good though; DQ does a good breakfast.
